The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway, is one of the most peculiar books I’ve ever read. I say peculiar because of how eerily symbolic it is. The story is about an old fisherman who hasn’t had much success in catching fish. One day, he goes out, and hooks a BIG fish, a tuna, I believe. Anyway, the old man has to struggle with this catch for a few days. Then he finally reels him in.

What I found symbolic about this book is that the old man’s struggle with the fish can represent the struggles we all face. There are times when we “hook” something good, have to let it take us where it may, and maybe, after all is said and done, let it go. I don’t think Mr. Hemingway was just writing about the hardships faced at sea; he was also writing about the hardships faced in life.
