First Day of School!

We started off with Examining the Scriptures Daily, along with the copywork.  Afterwards, we discussed what we will be doing this week.  This is another idea I borrowed from HarmonyArts.  This is neat, because it gives the kids a chance to pipe in on what's coming up.

After that, we went on a nature walk.  Well, more of a stroll, really, since we didn't get very far before we were busily scribbling down what we were seeing.

We each brought in a tree leaf.  Tomorrow, we will try to identify the tree the leaves came from.  Flower Picker had so much fun, that she didn't want to stop! I'm not surprised, since she is my nature child.  I hope we all enjoy this, and continue drawing close to our Creator, through his creation.

We also did our Picture Study.  We started, by using a Still-Life kit that I purchased from Hearts & Trees.  This is going to get us about 2 months worth of study on Still Life!  I've also purchased other famous artists books with pages to color.  I plan to allow the kids use chalk, watercolor pencils, watercolor paints, as well as colored pencils and/or crayons to decorate.  We did this 2 years ago, and they really enjoyed it.  It's amazing how different the same picture can look, simply by changing the medium!

ASL followed, and it was interesting to see how much we'd "lost" after not using sign language in more than a year.  We spent the session signing the alphabet.  The girls have been practicing ever since!

For Science, the girls are learning about Frogs. It was their choice. I downloaded the story, The Adventures of Grandfather Frog, from the OFE website. I started reading it to them.  They love it!  This is the first time I've actually read a story like this to them, so it's a treat for all of us.  The girls are paying attention, and smiling and laughing at all the right spots. ;-)

When it came time for #1 son's one-on-one time, things went a bit wonky.  I don't know why I continue to use Abeka!  I don't like it.  Let me rephrase - I don't like how their high school stuff is put together.  I look at the teacher's books - with lesson plan and the 'say-this' stuff, and it makes my brain hurt.
I'm not an idiot, nor do I think that of the folks who use and love this stuff, but, something's just OFF!  I can't put my finger on it.  Anyway, long story short, #1 son will be starting this semester with Short Lessons in US History and I will continue to look for something more suitable for his World Geography - if he even takes that.  Does he need World History AND World Geography?  Either way, I'm thinking Unit Studies!!!

Which brings me to my next point... first day, and already I had to make changes.  This seems to make #1 Son nervous.  I explained that, even in public school, schedules get adjusted, and readjusted.
He sees things my way now. :-)

Anyway, that was our first day!
